Trade Mission to the U.S. West Coast – Creative Industries success in L.A.

In collaboration with the municipality of Amsterdam, A’DAM&Co, the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and local Los Angeles partners Holland Hollywood Connection and HUP, we organized a trade mission for Dutch startups and scale-ups active in the creative industries to Los Angeles. On March 12 and 13 of 2018, our group of promising Dutch companies had the opportunity to explore the dynamic and bustling creative scene of Los Angeles.

The participants were optimally prepared for the mission at the warm-up event DutchBasecamp, the municipality of Amsterdam and A’DAM&Co organized. Receiving pitch training by David Beckett, a great legal presentation on doing business in the U.S. by DLA Piper and an opportunity to ask their questions during our expert panel.

In L.A. the participants had a busy schedule. They visited successful Dutch companies like 72andSunny and Mediamonks, were set up with useful individual meetings, received more legal advice, had lunch with experienced Dutch entrepreneurs in L.A. and were invited to an opening reception in the world famous Getty Center. To top it all of the mission was ended with a spectacular rooftop networking event in downtown Los Angeles.

 

Participants, evaluation and follow-up

Staying true to our quality over quantity stance point, 5 very promising Dutch start- and scale-ups made the cut to join this trade mission to the U.S. West Coast: KANE Watches, Fromanteel Watches, Ohnana Tents, Since’94 and Badawī House Group B.V.

The participants reviewed both the mission as well as the warm-up event very positively. With ratings of 9 out of 10 for the warm-up event and 8.8 out of 10 for the mission the participating companies indicate that they are happy with the results of the mission. The entrepreneurs noted that they really liked the professionalism and commitment shown by all the organizing partners. They were also very appreciative of both the tailor-made as well as the general components of the program, all of them indicated that they got either very relevant follow-up or even new partners or deals as a result of this mission.

Most of the companies are preparing for future trips to L.A. and some are even considering L.A. as the place to go to for their next office and start their U.S. expansion. All of our participants would definitely recommend the program to other entrepreneurs, given that they must know very well what they are searching for in L.A. or the U.S. as a whole. Ohnana Tents Founder & CEO Wouter van der meij told us: ‘’This mission is one of the most valuable experiences I have had as a young entrepreneur, and one I would 100% recommend to my fellow entrepreneurs’’.
